Michal, a resident of a chareidi neighborhood in Jerusalem, who worked part-time as a kindergarten teacher, never knew that she was a victim of domestic abuse until she brought her newborn for a checkup and the nurse raised the issue.

“My husband was severely controlling,” Michal says. “He would write up a daily schedule, which I had to sign, stating what time I would wake up, what time I wouldcome home from work, clean the floor, go to sleep, etc. I wasn’t allowed to visit my family; I wasn’t allowed to go food shopping on my own…
